Fighter Wing JG 73 Laage 1995

How the visit came about and who organised it, the author can no longer remember (possible candidates are the aerospace student organisation EUROAVIA and the Freundeskreis Luftwaffe, both of which he belonged to at the time). In any case, at some point in the summer of 1995 he was at Laage air base, home of fighter wing JG 73, formed from fighter-bomber wing JBG 35 and the MiG-29 test wing, whose 1st squadron operated the MiG-29s taken over from the NVA.

On the day of the visit, not only the author's group but also an American delegation and US Navy F/A-18s were on site. To their presence the visitors owed a varied flying programme that even included an air combat demonstration by MiG-29 and Phantom, in which the latter did not do badly at all. In many places, traces of the original use of Laage airfield by the East German Air Force could still be seen, and many of the pilots and technicians taken over from the NVA had kept numerous mementos of their former service. Here is the photo report.
