Actually intended as a combination of holiday and exotic aviation experience, the 1999 Dubai Airshow – called "Dubai 2000" for marketing reasons – turned out in retrospect to be the only occasion on which the author was able to see one of the MiG-21-93 prototypes in flight. In addition, East and West presented a wide range of civil and above all military aircraft types in the hope of good business with the wealthy countries of the oil-rich region. Unfortunately, the flying programme at the extensive Dubai Airport took place far away from the visitors, but numerous atmospheric pictures were nevertheless taken:
